Pakistan post is a government project that is established to provide the public services and postal products to the people in Pakistan. The largest and oldest postal service in Pakistan is Pakistan post. Motto of Pakistan post is “serving everyone, everyday, everywhere”. Since 1947, department of post and telegraph worked under the same Ministry of Communication. On August 15, 1947, at Lahore the office of the postmaster general became operational. In the same year, Pakistan became the 89th member of universal postal union after joining it. The first postage stamp was issued in 1948. In 1962, the department was splited and Pakistan post department was placed independently under Ministry of Communication by the government.
Urgent Mail Service was started on 1 January 1987 in the country. Local packet and parcel service was introduced on 22 April 1987. To facilitate the sortation and delivery a five-digit postcode on 1 January 1988 was introduced. The post office was made an independent corporation after being separated from the ministry between 1 August 1992 and 16 July 1996. The headquarter of a new overseas postal circle was established at Islamabad on 1 December 1992 to modernize the working of foreign post units.
During the years, 2006 and 2007, 19 domestic airports were used to send the mails. A new Ministry of Postal Services was created on 3 November 2008 and Pakistan postal department was placed under this ministry. Pakistan postal is now one of the largest departments working that are providing ample of services and also working with many other federal and provincial government departments.
Ordinary and registered mailing, post boxes, certificate posting and parcel posting are the services that Pakistan postal is offering within the country. The Pakistan postal is providing some federal service as well like collecting the taxes, delivering the computerized national identity cards, saling the highway and motorway safety books, issuing and renewing the television license, paying the pensions to Pakistan Armed Forces and many others. Renewal the armed and driving licenses, saling the rout permit fee and motorway vehicle fitness stamps, and collecting the motor vehicle taxes are some provisional services that Pakistan postal department of offering.
Pakistan post also participates in some government businesses such as managing cash services for Khushali bank, delivering the NTN certificates, saling the PTCL phone cards, saling the agricultural loan pass books, saling the postal life insurance etc.
Pakistan post is not restricted to postal services only and it covers the large area of activities. In the economic and social development of Pakistan, Pakistan post is playing an important role.
