Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research center is the world’s first and largest nonprofit cancer hospital and research center situated in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. This charitable organization is the project of Shaukat Khanum Memorial trust and was established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 of Pakistan. The idea of this hospital was given by the Pakistani superstar cricketer Imran Khan who is now known as a politician as well. He decided to take step for the foundation of such hospital after the death of his mother Mrs. Shaukat Khanum with whom he was very attached and she died from cancer.
As it is a charitable hospital Imran Khan made an appeal to the people to donate him money for this noble cause. He appealed for the funds at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore on 10 November 1989 from a match between Pakistan and India. This led him to collect the donation of 2,902,600 RS. After this, he held more than 50 fund raisers throughout the world. In 1992, after winning the cricket world cup under the captaincy of Imran khan, just in six weeks he collected the fund of one and a half million the same amount that he collected earlier in two years. After winning the world cup, he donated his price money of 85,000 pounds for this hospital. Princes Diana also visited Pakistan to help Imran Khan to raise fund for his charitable project. Many other celebrities of the world helped and still helping Imran Khan for his charitable project.
Dr. Nusherwan K. Burki, MB, PhD, FRCP, FCPS of the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, Kentucky USA supervised the designing and execution of the plan with the collaboration of international team of cancer physician and research workers. Nayyer Ali Dadda a renowned architect and Associates of Lahore, overseen the architectural details. On April 1991, the master plan got ready for the execution and on 29 December 1994, hospital was opened for the patients.
Imran Khan is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is responsible for formulating the policies about researchers, bankers, businessmen and physicians. A very professional and organized team of clinical, administrative, and nursing is managing the hospital.
The clinical departments that are running under this hospital are medical oncology, pediatric oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, medicine, pharmacy, pathology, research and nursing.
A research center is also established here in the hospital because it would help to detect and treat the cancer in better way. The research center is working three different objectives. One is epidemiology that works to find out the lifestyle and the environmental causes of cancer. The other one is molecular biology that helps to predict the treatment responses and disease out come in better way. The last one is clinical trial that works to evaluate the existing therapies and the new therapies.
A second Shoukat Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center is now underway in the city Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkwa. The construction has been started and government has allotted 50 kanals for this project. Hopefully, this project would be completed in next three years.
