Saeed Ahmed

Mr. Saeed Ahmed was one of the legendary cricketers who got the talent to play the strokes all over the wicket. He is no doubt a great name in all time legendary cricketers who proved himself as an allrounder. He played 41 tests throughout his career. He was a right handed middle order batsman and right-arm off spinner.

Mr. Saeed Ahmed was born in Jallandhar (Punjab) India and started his test career in 1958. His brother Muhammad Younis Ahmed also played First class cricket and 4 tests from Pakistan side. Mr. Saeed Ahmed started his career as a middle order batsman in 1958 against West Indies at Bridgetown. He made 65 runs in the second inning and made a wonderful partnership with Little Master Hanif Muhammad who finished at 337. He made 508 runs in his debut series. He made five centuries in his period of play while in three of them he scored over 150.

He was known and criticized for his upright batting stance. Mr. Ahmed was forced to change it during his tour to England in 1962. He decided to crouch more for a better view but it did not work successfully. In 1968-69 he took his turn after Hanif Muhammad and became the captain of Pakistan team which showed a result of three drawn matches. As a fine off spinner he took 22 wickets in which the best was 4/64 in test internationals and 8/41 in first class.

Unfortunately his career ended at a controversy. Pakistan team was visiting Australia, when due to the reason of back injury he declared himself as unfit. Pakistan team management was doubtful at this situation and decided to send him back for indiscipline. Actually in second test match at Melbourne, Saeed Ahmed and Dennis Lilly had some hard debate. Lilly vowed to take revenge in coming Sydney test. His career was remarkable but finished unpleasantly.

In recognition to contributions in cricket, Pakistan Government awarded this legendary cricketer with Pride of Performance Award in 1962. He played not only for Pakistan national team but he also performed for P.I.A, Karachi, Lahore, Pakistan Railway, Public works department, Pakistan Universities and Punjab cricket teams.
