To provide the emergency services in Punjab province of Pakistan, an emergency service named Rescue 1122 is established. It is called 1122 because it can be accessed from any phone by calling the number 1122. To provide of emergencies such as rescue, fire and emergency medical services, it was established under the 2006 Punjab Emergency Service Act. Today Rescue 1122 Pakistan’s Director General is Dr. Rizwan Naseer. To ensure the management and prevention of emergencies, the Punjab Emergency Council and District Emergency Board were constituted.
Rescue 1122 is working with a mission statement of “Development of safer communities through establishment of an effective system for emergency preparedness, response and prevention”.
Initially as a pilot project, Rescue 1122 was launched in Lahore in 2004. However, after a successful start now this emergency service is active in all the main cities of Punjab and is other provinces are also taking technical assistance from this rescue service. Rescue 1122 has the equipped ambulances, rescue and fire services. Many Community Safety Programs are also held by this emergency service in various educational institutions and other places to provide the awareness to the people so they could be able to provide the first aid and could took other safety measures.
All the responsibility of day-to-day operational management and administration of the service in the District is held on the District Emergency Officer. Through the Provisional Monitoring Cell, the office of the Director General monitors to ensure the overall uniformity and quality, planning, research and training.
A center to impart emergency medical training high angle and confined space rescue, fire fighting collapse structure and research, water rescue and other emergency management skills the Emergency Services Academy is established that is first of this kind of training institute of Pakistan. The Punjab Emergency Service that is also known as Rescue 1122 develops all the practical training material delivered in this academy.
Training of emergency management includes using different kinds of incident scenarios. To conduct medical first responder, training for instructors and collapsed structure search and rescue the instructors of this academy are trained by the Enchantment of Emergency Response program of USAID.
This academy is offering many programs in which short courses and specialized courses are included. The mainly conducted course by this academy at present is a six months Basic Rescue Course. this course includes rescue, emergency medical, fire and physical fitness training. Specialized courses like collapse structure search and rescue, medical first aid responder and training for instructors are also being offered by this academy.
