In Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam University is situated. It is a public and research university that offers the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs. Below the Margalla Hills, this university is spread over an area of 1700 acres. Initially in July 1967, this university was established as the University of Islamabad. According to the Higher Education in Pakistan, among all the public institutions this university is rated as the top university. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan ranks this university as the best university of Pakistan. In 2012, by the QS World University Ranking, Quaid-e-Azam University was listed as one of the world’s best universities.
An Act of National Assembly passed and in July 1967, a university as University of Islamabad was founded. This university took its start from a rented house in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi. Within five years in October 1971 this university was shifted near the shrine of Hazrat Bari Imam and is located in Margalla Hills and it is current location. On the century celebration of founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1967, the university was renamed to Quaid-e-Azam University that was the title of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Quaid-e-Azam University focuses on research and is collaborated with the universities of United States, South Asia and Europe. The central library of university contains 1,95,000 volumes books and the name of library is after the name of the first vice chancellor of university Dr. Raziuddin Siddique and library is called The Raziuddin Siddique Memorial Library. To get access to worldwide online database, university is linked with the HEC digital library. Some subject specific libraries are also established in the departmental buildings. For the seats of each province, university has a quota merit system. The first student’s cultural council at university was set up in 1983 with the name of Mehran Students’ Council. After that many other organizations and councils like Jammu Kashmir Student Organization, Pakhtoon, Baloch, Punjab and Gilgit Baltistan councils were founded.
University has separate teaching and research institutes and for postgraduate faculties. Four faculties, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Natural Science, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Medicine (affiliated) are set up here. Institutions over here are National Institute of Historical and Cultural Research, Center of Excellence in Gender Studies, National Defense College, School of Economics, National Institute of Psychology, National Institute of Pakistan Studies and Computer Center of Quaid-e-Azam University.
Separate hostels for boys and girls to accommodate them are also provided and houses for staff accommodation are also available near the campus. Transportation facility is also provided by the university to the students living in Islamabad and in the main areas of Rawalpindi.
