Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) came into existence in the year 1995. It was a single school in the beginning and was named as Pakistan School of Fashion Design. This school is now one of the four schools of the institute.
The need for establishing a fashion school in Pakistan was felt in the 90’s by the federal government itself. This institute is working under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce. As Pakistan is an agricultural country, and the cotton textile industry largely pumps the economy, it is really needed that Pakistan get into the industry with expertise. Without enough qualified designers, Pakistan was unable to compete with the international industry. So the Ministry of Commerce and the Trade Development of Pakistan joined hands and laid foundations of the school. Today the school has become a state of the art organization with four schools imparting education in six disciplines. The institute is stretched over an area of 28000 square yards.
The school got its name “Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design” in 2008 and got the degree awarding status in 2010. The institute is affiliated with a world famous French school of fashion, “L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne”. They helped PSFD in making the course outline in Fashion Design.
