Mobilink is a Pakistan Mobile Communications (PVT) Limited; it provides telecommunication services in Pakistan. The company is country’s top cellular operator and has a base of 31.5m subscriber and has 31%share of market in October 2010. In Islamabad its head office is located. Pakistan started the first GSM cellular services by Motorola in 1994 as Mobilink. Then Orascom Telecom Company owned it, which is an Egypt based multinational company known as Orascom Telecom Egypt (Vimpelcom Group). The Orascom is trying to diversify its services range by creating new businesses.
It is a privatized company. The company has facilitated almost 1000 cities, villages and towns across the country. Rashid Khan is the President and the CEO of the company. It provides both prepaid and post paid facility to the consumer. Post paid connection is sold as Post paid Indigo where as Prepaid connection is sold as Prepaid Zem. They have also offered DSL broadband through a completely owned supplementary, Link Net. Under the label of “Mobilink Infinity” the company has launched a new wireless broadband service by WiMax based technology and the service is launched in 26 major cities of Pakistan which includes Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi, Gujranwala, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Jhelum, Abbotbad, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Quetta, Wah, Rahim Yar Khan, Mardan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sukkar, Ghazi Kot, Nawab Shah, Bahawalpur and Larkana. Alcatel is supporting the technology and they are using ZYXEL Customer Premises equipment. Trans World Associates was also owned by the same group, which actually operates an undersea fiber cable from Karachi to Fujairah, UAE. R$3.2B and R$6B valued bonds were issued by Moblink in June 2010.
Mobilink being patriotic has a vision of a homeland and documentary was made to explain and educate people. The documentary was titled as “Mobilink’s Journey through Pakistan”. The show was hosted by Wajahat Malik. The documentary entertained the audience and enlightened the great sense of patriotism. This was the first program organized under telecommunication banner.
Mobilink has introduced Mobicash which is a branchless banking segment by incorporating with Waseela microfinance bank. Through the service people can easily do financial transaction. The service includes bill paying, sending and receiving money within Pakistan, mobile accounts, mobile top ups and Jazz load. Mobicash is approved by State Bank of Pakistan. Mobilink has also won 668 Promo awards.
