In the north-western part of Sindh, Pakistan, lies the fourth largest city known as Larkana or Larkano. Larkana is situated within Larkana District. Until the year 1900, Larkano was named as “Chandka”. The hundredth anniversary of its beginning was celebrated in August 2004.  Larkana is generally situated on the south bank of the Ghar canal, which is 40 miles to the south of Shikarpur town and almost 36 miles to the north-east of Mehar. In the past Larkana was the headquarter of Larkana District and Larkana Taluka during the ruling period of British over Sindh. Larkana was even the fraction of Bombay Presidency of British India.


In Larkana many educational institutes are established some are Chandka Medical College (CMC), Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University and Quaid-e-Azam University college of Engineering sciences and Technology Larkana. CMC was established in 20 April 1973 by the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. In Sindh, CMC was the fourth Medical school to be inaugurated. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University was founded on 12th April 2008. The VC of SMBBMU is Dr Akbar Hyder Soomro where as the Principal of the Medical College is Dr Asadullah Mahar and in 2009, Engineering College Larkana was established, its aim was to provide Engineering and Technological facilities to the citizen of Larkana and this project was approved during the PDWP meeting of Government of Sindh.


There are number of schools within this region as it has Fauji Foundation School, Saint Joseph High School, Govt. Degree School, Shams High School, The City School, Saint Rose Marry English High School, Public School Larkana, Cadet College Larkana, Indus School Larkano and many more.

Larkana is rich with fertile land and variety of fruits and vegetables are cultivated here like potatoes, olives, orange, lemon, carrots, mangoes, guava and cucumber are richly produced in this region. Numerous species of birds roam are found in Larkana even in winter migratory birds comes to this region normally from Siberia and Russia.

Bhutto family is chiefly known for its association with this region. In the core of Larkana city lies the Larkana Railway Station and this railway station links Larkana with the rest of Sindh and Pakistan. It is also allied through bus to the majority of Pakistani cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Quetta.


Sindhi language is commonly used by the population of both Larkana and District of Larkana even English is also understood by the citizens. Mohenjo-Daro the world’s oldest archeological site lies 28 km away from the city.
