DJ Science College was founded by Lord Dufferin, who was the Viceroy of occupied India. It was opened in a bungalow situated on Bunder road by Lord Reay, the Governor of Bombay on January 17, with the name Sindh Arts College. At that time the number of students was just 28 and only 5 staff members were employed.
The name DJ Science College was given when it was shifted to the present site in 1887. Mr. Diwan Dayaram Jethmal was the person behind the successful foundation of the college as he was a major contributor in financing it. The college is named after him.
After the new building was constructed, the college progressed from just one Arts faculty to those of Sciences, Engineering and Law. Later on, a discrete Engineering college and a Law college were built in 1922 and 1925 respectively due to which classes were abandoned in these disciplines. Before partition the college was a source of academic guidance for Sindh and Bombay University students and researchers. The college was ceded to the Government of Sindh, Pakistan in June 1984. Hence the Sindh Government took charge of all property which included the main DJ College building, the Annex, the Commerce, Law and Engineering College buildings, Hostel and Gymkhana.
