COMSATS Islamabad


COMSATS stands for Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South. It is an international organization. The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) proposed for the foundation of COMSATS under the patronage of Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam. At the time of the establishment of the COMSATS in 1994, a conference was conducted on 4th and 5th October. It was decided at the conference that Islamabad would be permanent Secretariat of the Commission. COMSATS represents 21 developing countries of three continents.


The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad, started operating in 1998. The Federal Government granted it the status of a Degree Awarding Institute (DAI) in the year 2000, keeping in view its achievements. The institute is now being considered to be ranked as a university by a parliamentary act with the name “COMSATS University”.

In its first year the institute just had a single classroom and offered some certificate courses and a diploma in computer studies.

Today, over 5000 students are receiving education in the newly built Chak Shahzad campus. Now, the launch of an overseas campus in the Gulf is also being contemplated.

About the Institute:

The institute has a board of governors that takes care of its issues. The board is headed by the Executive Director of COMSATS. This BOG comprises of scientists, policymakers and educationists of prominence. Representatives from the Ministry Of Science And Technology, Ministry Of Information Technology, Ministry Of Education, NESCOM, PAEC, the Higher Education Commission are among the board members. The academic and administrative affairs are the duty of the Rector.

Research activities are religiously carried out at CIIT. Some 2508 research articles have been published by the faculty members in international journals.

The institute is resolved on a threesome mission of; Research and Discovery, Teaching and Learning and Outreach and Public Service. 1745 faculty members – out of whom 320 carry a PhD degree – are employed at CIIT. Currently 5 faculties giving education in 16 departments are at work at the institute. The institute has 7 different centers namely CERN, CISCO Regional Academy, IT Center, Center for Quantum Physics, Business Incubation center, Center for Micro and Nano Devices and Center for Professional Development.

COMSATS CIIT Islamabad is a rapidly advancing institute and is worth commendation.
