The secondary and intermediate education is under governmental body called Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE). After the independence of Pakistan, University of the Punjab was responsible for conducting the Matriculation and Intermediate level examinations. The board of secondary education, Punjab was established in province at Lahore after through the circulation of the Punjab University Act Ordinance 1954. In year 1955, the first exam of matriculation and intermediate level was conducted. An increase in the candidature was seen and under West Pakistan Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education Ordinance No. XVII of 1968, two more boards at Sargodha and Multan were established.
Two more boards at Rawalpindi and Gujranwala were established as a result of further division. Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahab come under the BISE Lahore. Through the board of Lahore, every year around two million students appear in the matriculation and intermediate examination and this board is considered the Pakistan’s biggest educational board. There are two types of groups that are awarded certificates at the matriculation level by the Lahore board and they are science group and arts group. Six types of groups get certificates from the Lahore board at intermediate level and that are arts group, general science group, computer science group, commerce group, pre-engineering group and pre-medical group.
Board actually is the governing body that controls all the affairs at office. It includes the chairperson, the vice-chancellor, all executive district officers, the director of technical education or his nominee, one representative of Finance and Education, one principle of a degree college, one principle of intermediate college, two headmasters and two headmistress of school and two persons amongst scholars or retired educationists nominated by the controlling authority.
At the time of BISE Lahore’s beginning, board was supposed to conduct examination in the provinces of Punjab, Baluchistan, Azad Kashmir and Northern areas. However, currently board is limited to the Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahab.
Every year board of intermediate and secondary education Lahore conducts examination of matriculation and intermediate levels. BISE Lahore is supposed to form date sheet for the students of different subject groups and then to publish it as well. After conducting the exam, BISE Lahore accumulates and announces the results. Results of matriculation are announced at the end of the July or at the start of August. Similarly intermediate results are announced in late August or start of the September.
