Army Medical College

History

It was resolved by the Government of Pakistan to set up the Army Medical College in 1976 and classes for MBBS started in 1977. It was established as a residential institution. The college is affiliated with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) since 1998

although in the beginning the affiliation was with Quaid-e-Azam University. The program for dental surgery (BDS) started in 1998. The number of students enrolled here has doubled since the college was founded. Though the college gives training to serving cadets as well, most students are private students who are not serving the army.

Campus:

The college campus is stationed on Abid Majid Road in Rawalpindi cantonment. The college is inside a prodigious campus. There are 6 hostels for male and female students. These hostels are called as the “cadet companies”. It is mandatory for the students to stay at the college hostels.

Synopsis:

The Army Medical College offers MBBS program for 5 years and BDS program for 4½ yearsaccording to the syllabus designed by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Cadets are granted permanent Regular Commission in the Army Medical Corps/Army Dental Corps after completion of the course. The under training medical and dental cadets are restrained to serve the army for 13 years after getting their respective degrees. They receive a stipend of about Rs.6200 per month.

The college faculty includes 14 Professors, 14 Associate Professors and 30 Assistant Professors. The college strives to provide the students with the best in all fields, be it studies, medical facilities, co-curricular activities or sports. A strict discipline is observed at the college which is peculiar of the army institutions. The college has a cafeteria, a beautiful mosque, a squash court, swimming pool and gym. All departments of the college are well equipped and recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. The college also proudly publishes a biennial magazine AMCOL.

Computer labs and internet facilities are par excellence. Students get printing, scanning and CD writing facilities and a WIFI system for internet. The college website is planned to be launched soon.

The AMC is one of the best medical colleges in the country and one hopes that the students who graduate from this college serve the country to the full.
